Indigenous Church Planting, Discipleship, and Evangelism - Ecuador

This job is an opportunity to support church planting efforts of Pato and Andrea Leon and assist local ministry in rural and indigenous communities throughout Ecuador. Individuals and families will work alongside national pastors and missionaries, contributing to evangelistic outreach and discipleship in a variety of ministry settings.

Your role will vary based on your gifts and interests, with opportunities in:

  • Evangelism & discipleship
  • Preaching or teaching
  • Children’s ministry
  • Women’s ministry
  • Music & worship leadership

Individuals and families will travel with ministry leaders to local village churches, serving in their area of focus. Sundays are typically full days of church involvement, and many evenings throughout the week are also dedicated to ministry activities.

Church planting among indigenous Shuar communities

Often beginning completely from scratch in areas where there may not yet be a single believer. Other times, the work involves guiding small, newly formed groups of believers toward spiritual maturity and equipping them to share the gospel with their own people.

Typical tasks include:

  • Teaching children’s Bible clubs and Sunday school
  • Leading music in small church services and teaching music
  • Preaching, evangelism, discipleship, and providing biblical correction

Home visits

Conducted as needed, often at unplanned times. These may involve evangelism, visiting the sick, offering encouragement, or helping resolve conflicts.

Location: Macas, Ecuador

The job is based in Macas, a small city located on the edge of Ecuador’s Amazon jungle. Surrounded by lush, green high jungle, the climate is humid and temperate year-round, with temperatures ranging from 60–80°F—though it can get hotter deeper into the jungle.
Spanish is the primary language spoken in the region, though among the older indigenous communities, Shuar is also commonly spoken. The population of the area is a mix of mestizos, indigenous Shuar, and smaller groups of Quichua and Achuar people—especially in more remote jungle areas.
While Macas offers many modern conveniences, it’s just a short trip to rural jungle villages where access to electricity, clean water, and other resources is limited. Over 70 years ago, the gospel was brought to these jungle communities, but much of that initial mission work has faded. Today, hundreds of villages remain without a consistent gospel presence—highlighting the urgent need for renewed ministry and discipleship efforts in these areas.
This internship offers the unique opportunity to live in a culturally rich, spiritually needy region—serving both in the city and in remote areas still waiting to hear the good news of Jesus.

Accommodations:

Housing is typically in a private apartment, offering a comfortable and independent living space.
